About 304 Stillwater Furniture

304 Stillwater Avenue Furniture in Bangor was founded in 2009 by Forrest Grant. We offer two floors of quality furnishings and bedding, along with 8,000 square feet of made in Maine, solid wood, unfinished furniture. We proudly feature mostly American made furnishings throughout our store and strive to buy from US manufacturers whenever possible. Whether you are furnishing an older home in town, a mid-century house, a camp or home on the lake, or a coastal Maine cottage, we have styles to perfectly fit your décor and custom orders are our specialty!
The Grant family’s deep roots in the Bangor and eastern Maine business community now span four generations. Forrest’s father, Judson Grant, Sr., began in business in 1931, and was best known for Grant’s Trailer Sales. In that business, used furniture was often taken as a down payment on trailers. Employees would repair and refinish the furniture to sell. Forrest’s older brother, Bud, began working with his father and eventually started buying new furniture, as well. This business evolved into Broadway Furniture; a landmark business operated by Bud Grant in Bangor for many years. The family owned and operated numerous other commercial and residential properties over the decades, but the furniture business was always at their core.
In 1990, Forrest Grant acquired the Mill Mall in Ellsworth, Maine. An old woolen mill, he transformed it into a shopping mall with a mix of retail shops and offices. To fill a large space in the mall, he opened “Mill Mall Treasures” and offered booth space rental to sellers of antiques, used furniture and other vintage treasures. Having success in that business, he decided to fill another space in the mall with new furniture, including made in Maine unfinished furniture that he sourced in central Maine…thus, Mill Mall Furniture was born!
Forrest loves dabbling in commercial real estate. He has owned ten motels, 125 apartments and a mobile home park. In 2006, he had the opportunity to purchase a large commercial building near the Bangor Mall on Stillwater Avenue in Bangor, with the thought of leasing it. He seized the chance to grab this prime property but could not find a proper tenant right away. So, at age 77, Forrest Grant decided to open 304 Stillwater Avenue Furniture in November of 2009! He brought in many of the lines carried at Mill Mall Furniture, including the extremely popular Maine-made unfinished furniture. In the following years, the Klaussner upholstery line was added, along with Serta bedding and handcrafted Amish Trailway dining furniture.
Today, Forrest’s grandson, Jeremy Karam, oversees the day-to-day operations as store manager, but Forrest and his wife, Anne, are daily visitors and he is still active in the overall management of the store. Customer service is our top priority, and the staff works hard to accommodate each customer and their unique furniture needs. Custom orders are a specialty at 304, with hundreds of styles and fabric choices available in the Klaussner line and your choice of wood species, finish, legs, and chair styles in the Trailway dining line. Customization is also possible with some of our unfinished pieces. In addition, we offer unfinished Maine-made kitchen cabinetry, with optional finishing available, and will assist you with kitchen design.
At 304 Stillwater Avenue Furniture, we have seen steady growth since our doors opened in 2009, thanks to our convenient location near the Bangor Mall and Interstate 95 in Bangor. Customers come from all over northern, eastern, and central Maine to shop in our relaxed atmosphere and take advantage of our great values on quality, brand name furniture and bedding. Whatever your decorating style or budget, you’ll always get more…at 304!
